The Ryan Brenizer Method – Explained

I have been a fan of Ryan Brenizer photography, and from his work,I came to know about this Ryan Brenizer Method. He himself says :- “You know you’re obsessed with photography when you go on your honeymoon and invent a new photography technique.”

See this picture very carefully …and guess which lens I have used …

The picture above should be nearly impossible to take with my DSLR. Check the DOF ..it must be around at an impossibly fast f/0.8 (approx) ..which you and me don’t have …Let me tell you,I have shot this pic with my 50mm f1.8.

This was 28 shots with the 50mm f/1.8 ISO1600, stitched together.

The Brenizer Method – What ?
If you use a telephoto lens, you will get amazing bokeh, but the environmental feel will be gone …if you use a wide lens, the intimacy will be there, but no bokeh …what if you want both ? The answer is :- Ryan Brenizer Method (also similar to bokeh panoroma for Landscape photographers).

The Brenizer Method – How ?

Simple Steps :-

0. Decide the lens. You have to use the lens at the widest aperture as you are trying to take full advantage of shallow DOF. f1.2 or f.14 , both I dont have …hence f1.8 for me 🙂

1. Decide the background first…the framing, composition, light, no movement… subject should be in a comfortable pose so that they can hold for at least 30-seconds without moving.

2. Set the quality of your JPEG to the smallest setting. (RAW means more time in processing)

3. Go to Manual Mode, Set ap to maximum and set the proper shutter speed, auto WB, Manual Focus. Manual mode bacause all the individual pics should be of same Ap/Shutter as you will merge them together later.

4. Then focus your subject …and keen taking pics around the subject with lot of overlapping area.

5. Take lots of lots of pics !!

Here are few sample shot I did. One shot, taken with the 50mm at f/1.8: :-

6. Open in CS3 or some Autostich software …and combine/merge them. You will get something like this:-

7. Crop it accordingly and do curve, level adjustment …you will get this !!
